Affordable SEO services should come with a monthly cost you can keep up long enough for the work to count, and a written list of what that money buys. We're SEO Expert Marketing, a new agency that works remotely with small and local businesses, and our plans start at $395 a month (USD). Below: what "affordable" honestly means, what our entry plan covers, cheap offers to avoid, and free steps if $395 is too much.
What affordable SEO services should actually mean
Cheap and affordable aren't the same. A cheap offer has a low price. Affordable SEO services have a price you can sustain for several months, for tasks you can name, from someone who tells you what they change on your site. SEO builds slowly, so a plan you can only keep for eight weeks rarely has time to show what it can do.
Google's advice on hiring an SEO makes a useful point here: Google doesn't take payment to include or rank websites in its search results, and appearing in the unpaid (organic) results is free. So no fee buys a position. It buys someone's time: repairing your site, writing pages, setting up tracking and reporting on what changed.
Where affordable SEO services sit in the market
Backlinko's survey of SEO prices of more than 300 SEO professionals (last updated December 2025) puts the average monthly cost of SEO at $1,000 to $2,500. On a budget, these findings matter most:
- Plans under $500 a month are rare in the US, UK and Australia: only 7% of providers there work at that entry level.
- At that level, you usually get 5 to 10 hours of work a month, focused on one main area of SEO.
- The $501 to $1,000 tier typically means 10 to 20 hours a month.
- The professionals surveyed scored website size and complexity as the biggest price factor, ahead of how competitive your industry is.
Backlinko also counts your own time as a hidden cost (approvals, access, explaining your customers) and suggests setting aside a few hours a week for it, at least at the start. Treat these figures as a picture of the market, not a price list. Our guide how much does SEO cost compares the main surveys and pricing models.
What our $395 plan can and can't do
At $395 a month, SEO Starter sits in that entry-level price band, so it's fair to ask what it covers. The survey's hour counts describe the wider market, not our plans. It's meant for small and local businesses and fits best when the job is narrow: a handful of core services, one area to serve, and only a few competitors working on their SEO.
What SEO Starter can do
Starter begins with an initial SEO audit, then covers website repairs, proper setup of Google Search Console and Google Analytics 4 (GA4), local SEO and SEO content (up to 2 new or improved pages a month), with five tracked keywords in a monthly report. For a small site, that's the groundwork everything else depends on. Your written proposal sets out how much repair work fits into each month and which pages come first.
What it doesn't include
- SEO Growth is where keyword research and mapping, competitor analysis and internal linking begin.
- SEO Authority adds backlink and content-gap analysis, plus a weekly report.
- Starter tracks 5 keywords; Growth tracks 15 and Authority 30.
No plan buys links, and none promises a ranking. In a crowded market or on a large site, $395 a month will move slowly; the free website review is a good place to find that out before you spend anything.

Red flags in cheap SEO offers
A low price on its own isn't the problem. When you compare affordable SEO services from any provider, including us, check for these warning signs:
- A promised ranking. Google's hiring advice says nobody can secure the top result for you, and warns about claims of a "special relationship" with Google, a "priority submit" or submission to thousands of search engines.
- Link packages. Some affordable SEO packages sell backlinks by the hundred; treat that with real caution. Google's spam policies treat buying links for ranking purposes, automated link creation and low-quality directory or bookmark links as link spam, and say that sites which break them can be ranked lower or left out of results altogether.
- A vague monthly list. If a provider can't say which pages they'll change, you can't check the work.
- Accounts in their name. Your Business Profile, Search Console, analytics and domain should belong to you, with the provider added as a user.
- A low price tied to a long lock-in. Ask any affordable SEO agency, including us, how long the commitment runs and how to cancel.
On a smaller budget? Free steps you can take yourself
If our affordable SEO services are still beyond your budget, you can make progress for the cost of your time. Google's hiring guide is candid about this: if you run a small local business, it suggests you can likely handle a lot of the work yourself, beginning with its SEO Starter Guide.
- Claim your free Google Business Profile and complete every section. Our local SEO page explains why it matters.
- Set up Google Search Console, also free, to see which searches bring up your site.
- Give each main service its own page, titled with the service and the area you cover.
- Ask happy customers for reviews when you finish a job. Never buy reviews or write your own.
- Keep your name, address and phone number identical wherever they appear online.
If you'd rather pay for one job than a monthly plan, our SEO price list has fixed-price jobs from $39, such as a $59 audit or a $99 Google Business Profile setup.
Our owner's guide to SEO covers these steps in more depth. If you want guidance while you do the work, ask about SEO consulting; it has no published price, so a proposal would confirm the format and cost.

How to keep SEO affordable, and when to spend more
Affordable SEO services are about fit: moving up a plan only makes sense when your situation calls for it. As a rough guide:
| Your situation | Option | Keywords tracked | Reports |
|---|---|---|---|
| Less than $395 a month to spend | The free steps above, done yourself | Up to you | Search Console's free reports |
| One area, a few core services, little competition | SEO Starter, $395/month | 5 | Monthly |
| More services to organize, and competitors you need to understand | SEO Growth, $795/month | 15 | Monthly |
| A busy market where you want backlink and content-gap analysis | SEO Authority, $1,495/month | 30 | Weekly |
Signs you've outgrown a budget plan: you serve several towns, competitors publish new pages every month, or your site needs more repairs than a month's work can cover. The three plans are shown below, and our SEO packages page compares them line by line.
