Small business web design from SEO Expert Marketing is for local and service businesses that need a new website, or a rebuild of a tired one, that loads fast, works on phones, is easy for you to update and is built for search from day one. You get a WordPress or Shopify site with clear service pages, a simple way for customers to contact or book you, basic on-page SEO, and Google Search Console and GA4 set up before launch.
We're a new, remote agency serving small businesses in the USA, UK, Canada and Australia. We don't have a portfolio to show yet, so this page explains exactly how we work instead. If you already know what you need, request a web design quote and we'll reply with questions, then a written proposal.
What our small business web design includes
Every project is scoped to your business, but these are the parts we build into each site rather than selling as extras:
- A platform you can run yourself: WordPress for most service businesses, Shopify if you sell products online.
- Mobile-friendly, fast pages: built and tested on phones first, with images compressed and nothing heavy you don't need.
- Clear service pages: one page per main service, so customers and Google can see what you do and where.
- Contact and booking: a contact form, click-to-call, and a booking tool if you use one.
- Basic on-page SEO: page titles, descriptions, headings, image alt text, clean addresses and a sitemap.
- Measurement: Google Search Console and GA4 connected, so you can see searches and visits from launch day.
- Accessibility basics: readable text, good colour contrast, labelled forms and alt text.
The written proposal lists every page and feature, so you know what is included before any work starts.

Small business web design built for search from day one
A lot of small business websites look fine but are hard for Google to read: one long page for every service, no page titles, slow images, or a theme that breaks on phones. Fixing that later costs more than building it right. In our small business web design work, the page structure comes from the searches your customers actually make, so each service and area you cover has a clear home.
Speed matters too. Google measures real-world loading, responsiveness and visual stability through its Core Web Vitals, and we build with those in mind. Our guide to Core Web Vitals explains what the scores mean in plain English. Google's own SEO starter guide is a good read if you want to understand the basics we set up.
A new site doesn't rank on design alone. It gives you a clean, fast base. Our page on SEO for a new website covers what happens in the first months after launch.
WordPress or Shopify for small business web design?
We build on the two platforms we know best, and we'll tell you honestly which one fits.
- WordPress suits service businesses: plumbers, clinics, law firms, cleaners, consultants and similar. It's flexible, widely supported and easy to edit. See our WordPress SEO services.
- Shopify suits businesses that sell products online and want payments, stock and shipping handled in one place. See our Shopify SEO services.
If you already have a site on either platform and it just needs fixing rather than rebuilding, our technical SEO services may be the cheaper route. We'll say so if that's the case.
What "affordable web design" means here
We won't claim to be the cheapest, and we don't publish a fixed price, because a five-page site for a local electrician and a Shopify store with 200 products are very different jobs. Affordable website design, to us, means three things:
- Clear scope: the proposal lists every page, feature and task, with a price in USD and a timeline.
- No paying for what you don't need: we don't add custom features, paid plugins or extra pages unless they help your customers.
- A site you can update yourself: you can change text, prices and photos without calling a developer each time.
That last point saves the most money over the life of a website, and it's why affordable small business web design starts with the right platform, not the lowest quote.
How small business web design pricing works
Our small business web design services are quote-based. You tell us about your business, the pages you think you need, the features you want (booking, online payments, a blog) and whether you're replacing an old site. We then send a written proposal with the scope, the price in USD, the timeline and who does what.
You can compare quotes on equal terms, because ours names everything. There's no obligation, and nothing starts until you approve the proposal in writing.
Website design and SEO packages
Some owners want a website design and SEO package in one. We offer it honestly: the site build is one priced item, and an optional monthly SEO plan can follow after launch as a separate item. Our monthly plans start with Starter from $395 a month; the SEO packages page compares them. You can take the build alone, the plan alone, or both.

Replacing an old website without losing traffic
Many small business web design projects are rebuilds. If your current site gets visits from Google, a rebuild can lose them when old page addresses stop working. Before launch we list your existing pages, keep addresses where possible and set up 301 redirects from old addresses to the matching new pages. Our guide to 301 redirects explains why this matters. After launch we check Search Console for errors and fix any missed redirects.
Accessibility basics
Good small business web design should work for people who use screen readers, keyboards or zoom. We build in the basics: real headings, alt text on images, labelled form fields, enough colour contrast and text that resizes. The W3C's introduction to web accessibility explains why this matters. We don't sell a formal accessibility audit or certify compliance with any law; if you need that, tell us and we'll say what we can and can't do.
You own your domain, hosting and content
With any small business web design project, the website should belong to you. We recommend that the domain name and hosting account are in your name, paid by you, with us added as a user. Your text, photos and logo stay yours. If you ever stop working with us, you keep the whole site and can hand the logins to anyone else.
We'll confirm hosting and domain arrangements in the proposal, including who sets them up and who pays for them.
What we need from you
Small business web design goes faster with real input from the business. We'll ask for:
- Your logo, or permission to use a simple text logo for now.
- Real photos of your work, team or premises where you have them.
- Facts about your services, prices if you publish them, areas you serve and opening hours.
- Quick approval of page text and the design before launch.
We can write the page text for you from your answers, but you approve it. Quick replies keep the project on schedule.

Who this suits, and who it doesn't
Our small business web design suits local and service businesses that want a clear, fast site they can manage themselves, built to be found in Google and Maps. It pairs well with local SEO services and our wider small business SEO work.
It's not the right fit if you need a complex web app, custom software, or a large catalogue on a platform other than WordPress or Shopify. We'll tell you if that's the case rather than take on work we can't do well.
