AI Overviews and SEO: What Small Businesses Should Do Now: What small businesses should do now

Google's AI Overviews put an AI-generated summary at the top of many search results, with links to the web pages it draws on. AI Mode goes further, letting people ask follow-up questions in a conversation. Many small business owners worry that these summaries will take away their clicks or that they need a new kind of SEO. The reality is calmer: Google says the same SEO best practices still apply, and the businesses that do well are those that publish clear, useful, trustworthy information. This guide explains what AI Overviews are, what Google says about them and seven practical steps.

What are AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are summaries generated by Google's AI that appear above or among the normal search results for some searches, usually questions where a quick overview helps. They include links to web pages that support the summary. AI Mode is a separate, more conversational experience in Google Search. Both draw on Google's index of the web, the same index your pages appear in.

What Google says about AI Overviews

Google's page on AI features and your website is clear: the best practices for SEO remain relevant for AI features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode, and there are no additional requirements to appear in them, nor other special optimizations necessary. Pages need to be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet. Google also notes that meeting the requirements doesn't mean a page will be shown, which is true of search in general.

Do AI Overviews reduce clicks?

For some simple informational searches, an AI summary may answer the question without a click, just as featured snippets and knowledge panels sometimes did before. For searches where people want to hire someone, compare options, see prices or buy, people still need to visit a business. Most small businesses earn their enquiries from that second kind of search. Sites shown in AI features are counted in Search Console's overall search traffic, so keep watching your own Performance report rather than headlines.

7 practical steps

1. Keep the technical basics right

Your pages must be crawlable, indexable and eligible for snippets. If a page is blocked, set to noindex or uses a nosnippet rule, it can't be used as a supporting link. Our technical SEO audit checklist covers the essentials.

2. Answer real questions clearly

AI Overviews often appear for questions. Put a clear, direct answer near the top of the relevant section, then explain the detail. Use the questions customers actually ask, in headings, and answer them in plain language.

3. Add what only you know

Generic information is easy for AI to summarize from anywhere. First-hand details are not: your prices, your process, local rules, photos of your work, common problems you see and how you fix them. Google's guide to helpful, people-first content asks whether content offers original information and first-hand experience.

4. Make your business facts consistent

Name, address, phone, opening hours, services and areas should match across your website, Google Business Profile and directories. Clear, consistent facts are easier for any system, AI or not, to trust and repeat accurately.

5. Strengthen your Google Business Profile

For local searches, the map results and Business Profiles remain central. Complete every relevant section, choose accurate categories, add real photos and earn steady reviews. Our local SEO checklist covers the details.

6. Build pages for decisions, not just definitions

Pages that help people decide, such as price guides, comparisons, "what to expect" pages and service pages with clear next steps, bring visitors who are closer to buying. Those are the visits AI summaries are least likely to replace.

7. Measure what matters

Track enquiries, calls and sales from organic search, not only clicks. If clicks to an informational article fall but enquiries from service pages hold steady or grow, your SEO is still doing its job.

Three of the steps, covering your facts, profile and decision pages:

Facts, profile and decision pages (diagram): Consistent facts, Business Profile, Decision pages

An example: two pages, two outcomes

Imagine two plumbing firms with an article on why a boiler loses pressure. The first rewrote a generic explanation found elsewhere. The second explains the three causes its engineers see most often, shows photos of a pressure gauge and a leaking valve, says which fixes are safe for a homeowner and which need an engineer, and gives a typical call-out price. An AI summary can cover the generic basics from many sources, but the second page offers details a summary can only point to, and it gives a reader who wants help a clear next step. That's the kind of page worth building.

How to watch the impact on your site

Compare Search Console data month by month for your informational articles and your service pages separately. If impressions stay steady but clicks to some articles fall, those searches may be answered on the results page more often. Don't panic and delete those articles: they still build trust and visibility. Instead, check that each one links clearly to the relevant service and that your service pages answer the decision questions people ask. Keep an eye on enquiries, because that's the number that pays the bills. A short monthly note of what changed on the site helps you link any shift to its likely cause.

What not to do

  • Don't buy "AI SEO" packages that promise placement in AI Overviews; Google says there are no special optimizations.
  • Don't mass-produce thin AI-written pages; Google's spam policies cover scaled content created mainly to manipulate rankings.
  • Don't block Google from your site out of fear; you'd disappear from normal results too.
  • Don't rewrite your whole site overnight; improve your most important pages first.

Four things not to do:

Can you stop your content appearing in AI Overviews?

Google's documentation explains that the controls that limit snippets, such as nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet, also apply to AI features. Using them limits how your content can be shown, including in normal results, so most small businesses are better served by being visible and helpful than by opting out.

AI summaries and local businesses

A homeowner might ask Google how to fix a leaking tap and get an AI summary. But when the job is beyond them, they search for a plumber, and the results show map listings, reviews and websites. Local businesses that are easy to find, easy to trust and easy to contact still win those moments. That's where most of your effort belongs.
