Local SEO tactics are the actions that help a business appear when people nearby search for what it offers, in Google Maps, in the local pack of three businesses and in normal results. For a plumber, a dentist or a café, they often matter more than any other kind of SEO, because most customers come from a few miles away. This guide lists twelve local SEO tactics that work, in the order we'd tackle them, and explains why each one matters.
How Google ranks local businesses
Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity. Relevance is how well your profile matches the search. Distance is how far you are from the searcher or the location they mention. Popularity, which Google sometimes calls prominence, is how well known your business is, from reviews, links, articles and directories. You can't change distance, so good local SEO tactics focus on relevance and popularity.

Google Business Profile tactics
1. Complete every part of your profile
Fill in your business name, address or service area, phone number, website, hours, services, products, attributes and a clear description. Google's ranking help says that businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up in local search results.
2. Choose the right primary category
Your primary category is one of the strongest relevance signals. Pick the one that best describes your core business, such as "Emergency locksmith service" rather than just "Locksmith" if that's what you do most. Add a few secondary categories for other main services, but Google's profile guidelines say not to use categories solely as keywords.
3. Use your real business name
Adding keywords or town names to your business name can seem like a shortcut, but Google's guidelines say the name should reflect your real-world name, as used on your storefront, website and stationery. Profiles that break the rules can be suspended, which is far worse than any ranking gain.
4. Post updates and photos regularly
Fresh photos and regular updates show customers you're active and give them reasons to choose you. Our guide to Google Business Profile posts has twelve ideas you can use straight away.
Review tactics
5. Ask every happy customer for a review
Reviews are among the most visible local SEO tactics, because they affect both popularity and whether people click. Make asking part of your routine: a short message with a direct review link after every job. Never buy reviews, offer rewards for them or write your own; Google's policies forbid it.
6. Reply to every review
Thank people for good reviews and answer bad ones calmly, with a way to put things right. Replies show future customers how you treat people, and they're a chance to mention the service you provided naturally.
Website tactics
7. Give each main service its own page
A single "Services" page listing everything can't match specific searches well. One clear page per main service, with what's included, prices or price guidance and the areas you cover, gives Google and customers what they need. Our guide to local SEO keywords shows how to choose what each page targets.
8. Show your location clearly
Put your business name, address and phone number on your site in text, not only in an image, and embed a map on your contact page. Adding LocalBusiness structured data helps search engines read those details reliably.
9. Create location pages only where they're real
If you serve several towns, a page for each can help, but only if each has something genuinely local to say, such as jobs done there, local regulations or travel times. Near-identical pages for every town are treated as doorway pages and can do harm.
Citation and link tactics
10. Make your details consistent everywhere
Your name, address and phone number should match on directories, social profiles, Apple Maps, Bing Places and industry sites. Inconsistent details confuse customers and search engines. Our guide to local SEO citations explains where to start.
11. Earn local links and mentions
Links from local organizations carry weight because they're relevant and hard to fake. Sponsor a local team or event, join your chamber of commerce or trade association, offer to speak at a community group or share useful local information that newspapers and bloggers want to mention. Label any paid placements properly.
12. Track what matters
Use Google Search Console for your website and the performance section of your Business Profile for calls, direction requests and website clicks. Track enquiries from search, not just rankings. A monthly look at these numbers tells you which local SEO tactics are paying off.
Which local SEO tactics to start with
If you're starting from scratch, focus on the first three months like this:
- Week 1: complete your Business Profile, fix the categories and check your name, address and phone number everywhere.
- Weeks 2 to 4: start asking for reviews and replying to all of them.
- Month 2: improve or create one page per main service.
- Month 3: fix the main citations and start one local link idea.
Our local SEO checklist turns all of this into a list you can tick off, and a local SEO audit shows where you stand today.
If you're starting from scratch, here's the order for your local SEO tactics:

Local SEO tactics to avoid
- Fake addresses or virtual offices used only to appear in another town.
- Keyword-stuffed business names.
- Bought, swapped or incentivized reviews.
- Copy-paste town pages with only the place name changed.
- Hundreds of low-quality directory listings bought in bulk.
These can bring a quick lift, but they risk suspension of your profile or lower rankings, and recovery is slow.
Five local SEO tactics to avoid:

Example: a dog groomer's first month
Here's an illustrative example, not a client result. A mobile dog groomer has a basic profile with the category "Pet store", no photos and four reviews. In the first week she changes the primary category to "Pet groomer", sets her service area to the towns she actually visits and adds her services with prices. Over the month she adds before-and-after photos, sends a review link to every customer and replies to every review. She also rewrites her website's single page into separate pages for full grooms, puppy grooms and nail trims. None of these local SEO tactics cost money; together they make her profile and site far more relevant to the searches her customers make.
